Winter Concert 2010

December 9, 2010

Hello all,

I hope you are feeling festive and jolly! This is a reminder as posted on the website that we will have our annual Winter Concert in conjunction with the Middle School 6, 7, and 8th grade bands, at 7pm on Wednesday December 15, 2010 in the High School Gymnasium.  The program will feature a wide variety of winter and holiday related pieces, and the High School will be performing a program of pieces from around the world, from the traditional Sleigh Ride to a Calypso Christmas including a Reggae version of Silver Bells.  We will also be playing a combined piece with the 8th grade band, and a combined jazz band piece.  Please spread the word, and invite as many people as you would like! It will be a great event for the whole family.  Admission is free and open to the public, and donations will be accepted for the Music program.
High School students are asked to arrive at 6pm in concert black dress attire. Students will be performing in small ensembles in the lobby and the music hallway as people arrive to provide a festive atmosphere as people arrive for the concert.  The program is expected to go no later then 8:30pm, and students are asked to stay to help take down and move equipment and chairs.
Which brings me to some questions:
  • Would one of you be willing to sit at a desk and accept donations as people arrive to the concert.  If you could be there at 6:00pm, and sit at the desk with a basket for donations, and programs for people as they come in, that would be great!
  • Also, I wanted to put it out there that this might be a great place for a table of baked goodies we could sell for the Music Program also, but we would need some willing volunteers to make some goodies, and sit at the table with the cash box to sell them.  If this is too much, just tell me.  If we have enough people respond to me, I may put this out to all parents in the Music department to see if we can put something together for it.

Pep Games for the rest of the year & Shirts

October 14, 2010

We did not have enough students to play at tonight’s soccer game (Oct. 14), so we will forego the game tonight, and we will try to get as many people as possible to make it to next week’s football game on Oct. 22, the last regular season game before playoffs vs. Gorham.

So the Schedule for the rest of the Football season is as follows:

  • Friday Oct. 22, Football vs. Gorham (Pep Band)
  • Friday Oct. 29 or Sat. Oct. 30 Quarter-Finals (Full Band)
  • Saturday Nov. 6 Semi-Finals (Full Band) (If necessary)
  • Saturday Nov. 13, Finals (Full Band) (If necessary)
  • Saturday Nov. 20, Finals (Full Band) (If necessary)

As of this point, the Football team is undefeated, so we will be doing the first playoff game. If the game is away, we will take a bus to the event. We will not know if it is Friday or Saturday until after the Oct. 22 game, and i will let you know as soon as I know. If any student has a family conflict on the day of the game, please have a parent contact me by email or phone to let me know, and it will not be deducted from the student’s grade. However, it is important to both the band members and the community members that we are there to support our fellow students, and play as a unit. Playing at games like this helps build unity in the band, and as a community, and if you can do your very best to make sure you or your son/daughter can make it to these important games, it would be most appreciated.

Also in conjunction with these games, it will be important for students to show unification through what they will wear. As you may have heard at Kiwanis, it has always been on the top of my priority list to buy at least Pep Band Shirts for the students to wear at games. We have a few options that we could take with, and I would really like your input on this, but we will need to move fast for ordering.

  1. Students/Parents could purchase their own shirt, which would run between anywhere between $8.95-$28.95 if we are looking at long sleeve or sweatshirts. (In which case, the shirts would be yours, but each year wie will need to put in a new order for incoming students) Remember, students could use these for more then just Pep Band, as they will be nice shirts for all occasions.
  2. We could use the money the music Boosters has raised over the past 2 years. Knowing that this will cut into the money that we would use for a trip in the Spring Semester.
  • We could borrow the money from the Music Boosters $, and attempt to do some fund raising to pay this back by the end of the Semester.

If we take either option 2 or 3, we would most likely keep the shirts at the school for future years, so the Pep Band could use them. I am looking into 2 options for where to order, and a design:

  • First, the Fieldhouse store, used by many teams and organizations at the school.
  • Secondly, ImageMarket whom, I have used in the past, and students have been very happy with the results.

I would love your input on both the design, and the option for buying them. So please join the conversation, and add your input at the this Blog.

I would like to order these shirts by early next week at the latest, so that they will be in by our first game.

Fall Fundraising Efforts and a look at the year ahead

September 27, 2010

Hello all,

Another school year ahead of us, and there are already lots of ideas flying around with students, and parents for what they would like to see happen this year.  Here are some ideas that have been floating around:
Great East Festival:
In the past students have had the opportunity to compete in a Music Competition at the Great East Festival in Massachusetts, where students play as a band for a pannel of judges, and then work directly with the judges and are scored.  At the completion of the Festival students and chaperones have the opportunity to celebrate their efforts by going to Six Flaggs Theme Park. Students wanted to do this last year, but we did not raise the funds to do it, however we retained all the funds raised last year.
Students will be $44 each, and adults are $32 each this year.
As another thought, if we are not able to raise the $ again this year, there is an alternative Festival that takes place at Fun Town, nearby, which may not be as fun for the students, but would be a good alternative.
Pep Band Shirts:
As you have probably seen, there were some changes this year to our Pep Band schedule to involve more students, and we have seen a great result from both parents and students at the games.  As this is still something we are trying to build, the Pep Band needs to have at least matching shirts that can be worn when we play games, and especially if we are to play at playoffs and finals, so that people know who we are, and where we come from.
This is an essential item, and one that I hope we can raise the funds to order soon before the end of the season.
After speaking with Mr. Thomas about this need, we think we have a great opportunity to do fund raising during the game, but we need some ideas and parent volunteers to help with this.  Your ideas are welcome.
Field Trips to Performances & For Performances:
I would really like to find some performances that the full band, and chorus can attend to see and hear professionals making music.  The PSO often has wonder performances, and have indicated that we may attend for free, any rehearsal, so this may be a great opportunity to see behind the scenes.
I would also like the opportunity to take small groups, and possibly the full band and chorus into the community more for benefit events, which will also have added transportation costs.
I would welcome any comments and suggestions about this from parents and students. We need some ideas for fund raising, and this is a perfect forum for conversation.  It is a Blog, so all you need to do to comment and add your thoughts and suggestions is to hit the + next to the Comments below, and then type and add your comment.  This is also a place where you can let me know if you are interested in volunteering for things and events as needed.
Seniors & Awards:
I think it is essential that we continue to recognize the efforts of our seniors, and all students for finding a way to keep Band and Chorus in their Schedule throughout their High School career.  We usually do Senior Roses, but I would like to see more recognition and awards if possible.  I have some ideas from my previous school, but would love to have more conversations about this with you.
Thanks again, and I look forward to a great year of providing opportunities for our students.

New Music Website will take the place of this Blog

August 10, 2010

I am working on creating a music website dedicated the BEHS Music related events.  In order to keep all information in one central location, this Blog will no longer be in use.  Instead a Blog has been set up through the new website I am in the process of building.

The link is https://sites.google.com/site/behsmusic/

I hope this will be a useful tool in helping us communicate more this year, and so that you will be up to date with all the happenings in the music program. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Kiwanis help and ideas for Music Boosters

October 6, 2009

Hello all,

You will see that the first post I copy and pasted the informational letter for the Kiwanis performance.  I thought I would start this post with getting some feedback from you about how you as parents could be involved in fund-raising either at Kawanis or at future events.

At my past school, we had an official music boosters club, akin to a sports boosters club where parents would take an active role in doing fundraisers, usually just at concerts that we had throughout the year, as well as one candy sale we did before Christmas.

From what I gather from some of you and students, is that students are usually the ones who actively raise funds for their trip in the Spring to Massachusets. You can find more information about this here I think they need to take responsibility for this as well, I think it is great to keep them at the forefront of this.

So I suppose I would like some feedback from you about

  • What things have been done in past in the music program in general, and specifically surrounding fundraisers that you would like to see continue.  I know Mr. Thomas will also be involved with this, and he has mentioned a few things to me already about what has been done, and what he is planning, and I hope we can work as a team in the music department with students, parents, and teachers. I would like to hear your ideas on this.
  • How would you like to be involved at Kiwanis?  It may be too soon to do anything organized, but I was hoping that we would have some semblance of a desk set up for donations that a parent could man, and we may need some volunteers for this.
  • In what way would you like to see a music boosters club develop at Bonny Eagle High School?

Thanks again for any input you can give on this, and I look forward to being be contact with you throughout the year, and years to come.

Upcoming Performance schedule:

  • Friday, October 9, 2009; (optional) Pep Band Home Football Game vs. Windham.  7pm start. (students can earn extra credit towards their band grade if they participate. Students should arrive by 6:30 to set up in the bleachers).
  • Wednesday October 14, 2009 (required) at Kiwanis Beach
  • Friday October 16 (optional); Pep Band Home Football Homecoming Game. 7pm start.

Kiwanis Letter

Subject:  Special Band Performance October 14, 2009 4:30pm, Kiwanis Beach

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It has been a pleasure to get to know the students in band this semester at Bonny Eagle High School.  The band is off to a great start and, weather permitting, we have been offered the opportunity to participate in a special community performance at Kiwanis Beach on Wednesday October 14, 2009 at 4:30pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with the broader community in SAD 6, and it will provide an opportunity for the community and you to hear their musical development at work.  The band will be featured with the beautiful Kiwanis Lake as their backdrop at an outdoor mini-showcase of the Pep Band materials the Band has been working on since the beginning of the year.

The band will also utilize this event to kick off the fundraising efforts for the Great East Music Festival in the spring, in which I hope your son/daughter will choose to participate. Donations will be collected at the gate, and I am hoping to find a few parent volunteers to take these donations, and possibly be involved in coordinating the other fundraising efforts in conjunction, and beyond the scope of this first effort (more information will be emailed to you if you signed up for the Music Boosters email list).

Students will be required to provide their own transportation to the event.  Students should arrive by 3:45pm with their Instrument and Music, and something to keep their music in place on the stand in case of wind (clothes pins work wonders).  The dress attire will be casual for the performance as long as it is appropriate (jeans are allowed).  The program will last no longer then 45 minutes, and students will be free to leave with a parent at the conclusion.  I require that all students have this permission slip signed and brought back to me concerning this event.  If the student will not be riding home with a parent please indicate in the notes section with whom the student will be riding home.

Due to the important nature of this performance participation in this performance is required as part of your son/daughter’s Quarter grade.  If they are not able to attend the performance due to a prior conflict, they will still be required to do a make up assignment in order to gain the grade for the performance.  Instructions will be forthcoming on this assignment, and will be provided directly to your son/daughter if they cannot participate.

Please feel free to attend this event and tell any and all family, friends, and community members to attend as well.  Also feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

Jake Sturtevant
